‘Pressured’ Cameroon govt frees detained journalist Mimi Mefo

After barely two days in detention and with a huge backlash from a social media campaign calling for her release, Mimi Mefo was freed on Saturday her lawyers confirmed.

The English desk journalist with privately-owned Equinoxe TV was put before a military tribunal and hurriedly detained for endangering state security.

She had reported that a recent killing of a US missionary in the Anglophone region was at the hands of government soldiers.

Government had said the missionary was killed by separatist elements fighting for secession. Mefo is one of the leading lights in covering the Anglophone crisis.

Aside her work on TV, she uses social media – Facebook and Twitter – to give information on occurrences in the region but also across the country.
