Barcelona to play May 16 friendly with South Africa’s Sundowns

European and Spanish giants Barcelona have confirmed they will play a friendly match against South Africa’s 2017/2018 league champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the middle of 16 May.

Barcelona in a statement on Thursday confirmed that the game will be played at the FNB Stadium in Pretoria.

Sundowns had announced the match last week but said the final details were still being worked out. It had caused speculation over whether it would actually take place.

The prospect of seeing some of Barcelona’s top stars including Lionel Messi delighted Sundowns fans, many of them keen to see their local heroes take on some of the world’s best players.

The game will also be part of the commemoration of the centenary celebration of the life of the country’s first black president Nelson Mandela.

There is however talk about how much it cost Mamelodi Sundowns to bring the European giants to town – the club’s billionaire owner Patrice Motsepe was alleged to have paid close to $1m to bring Barcelona out for a one-off friendly.
