Ethiopia gives ex-PM Desalegn highest national award

The Ethiopian government of Tuesday evening held an official farewell for ex Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn at the National Palace.

The event was led by PM Abiy Ahmed in the presence of top government officials. Desalegn was awarded the highest national award for his exemplary service to Ethiopia between 2012 and 2018.

His wife Roman Tesfaye was also a beneficiary of an award from the government. Abiy thanked him for his tenure whiles he also tasked Ethiopians to support Abiy in his reform bid as per the ruling EPRDF’s announcement of January 2018.

Below is what was contained on Desalegn’s citation of honour

‘Ato Hailemariam Desalegn, the people and government of Ethiopia do recognize and greatly appreciate your honest, diligent and relentless service you’ve rendered to your country and people during your tenure as Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia from September 20, 2012 to April 2, 2018.

‘You made earnest contributions to strenghten …. and to build democratic systems to sustain economic development of the country and especially the indispensable role you have played to ensure a smooth and peaceful transfer of power for the first time in the history of the country.

‘Thus writing an audacious history which will be greatly remembered for generations to come. This (is) the nationa’s highest diploma of honour has been bestowed upon you in recognition of aforesaid and I wish (you) all the best in your future endeavours.
