Botswana’s new president praises 90-year-old mum in inaugural address

Masisi takes over from Seretse Khama Ian Khama, who has been president for the last decade. He will be in charge till general elections due in October 2019.

Botswana’s new president, Mokgweetsi Masisi gave his mother prominence in his inaugural address on Sunday, April 1, 2018; when he officially took charge of affairs as the fifth leader of the country.

Early on in his address after taking the oath of office, the 55-year-old mentioned a presidential fact for which he was proud.

After praising all four of his predecessors – Khama Snr, Masire, Mogae and Khama Jnr, Masisi said: ‘Permit me in a very special way to extend the same gratitude to my late father Honourable Edison Setlhomo Keitshoketswe Masisi who was among the founding leaders of Botswana.

‘I also pay my respects to my ninety (90) year old mother and proud to be the first President to be sworn in with their mother present to witness such. I love you mother,’ he stressed.

Photos shared on his Twitter handle showed that his mother was in the chamber of the National Assembly to witness the historic event.

Masisi takes over from Seretse Khama Ian Khama, who has been president for the last decade. He will be in charge till general elections due in October 2019.

The ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has a convention where the president steps down before the end of his tenure for his vice to complete the tenure. Khama also became president after his predecessor Festus Mogae left the stage in 2008.
